This position will be done remotely with the possibility of transitioning to our office in the future. This is a contract until at least April 15 2022, with the possibility of extension as we try out a new staffing model. It’s perfect for someone interested in playing a meaningful role in providing life changing experiences for youth and working as part of a small and dedicated team.

- This role will focus on being the primary coordinator of Northern Youth in Service, but will work closely with other team members. Coordination will include Participant support, logistics and coordination, liaising with volunteer and partners and coordinating reporting and communications. The Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring that we meet our deliverables.
- The conditions of the pandemic have made this project more challenging and the Coordinator will need to develop creative and flexible ways to assist Participants as they navigate changing circumstances, safety protocols etc.
- The Coordinator will work with other team members to help Participants create, build and launch their projects. This will include working participant recruitment and selection, check in calls, project planning, finding resources etc.
- Other tasks will include helping with funding applications, generating reports, coordinating volunteers, and more.
- The Coordinator will ensure consistent project support, have frequent communication with Participants and other stakeholders, and manage budgeting and reporting. Duties will include creating activities, hosting meetings, doing one on one check ins, and connecting Participants with the supports and resources they need to support their success.
- The position is based on 20 hours per week, with some flexibility. We are hopeful that we can receive clearance to host onsite training for the cohort later this year or in early 2022 and the Coordinator would be asked to attend in person (likely near or in Ottawa).
What We’d Like You to Bring
- This position best suits someone who is a natural connector and thrives bringing ideas to reality.
- Experience working with youth in a supportive role, and comfortable providing mentorship, guidance and encouragement in a positive and encouraging way. Previous experience in assessing needs, counselling, and education are all assets.
- Prior experience working with Northern Canada and/or Indigenous youth is a highly desired asset, as is knowledge of the issues affecting youth living in the Canadian north. We strongly encourage applications from NYA Alumni, and others with a connection to the North, including Inuit, First Nations and Métis candidates.
- Experience in coordinating projects including logistics, travel, reporting, evaluation – and everything else that makes a great experience for Participants.
- The ability to help youth thrive as they endeavor to develop skills and take on new challenges. This involves balancing support and high expectations, being encouraging and resourceful.
- Demonstrated experience in a similar role, through a combination of work experience and education, that has prepared you for this new challenge.
- Great organization, strong attention to detail, and eagerness to do great work, find new solutions, and work together to explore new potential.
- The ability to thrive with competing deadlines, changing priorities, and under pressure.
- To be a natural trouble shooter and solution finder.
- Experience working in a supportive role with youth is an asset, as is experience in non-profits, and with volunteers.
- A strong desire to play a big role on a small team – we value relationships that are based on kindness, generosity, collaboration and mutual support.
- We like technology – we think that it makes our small team able to do a lot more, and really just makes us better. We use a combination of traditional software suites like Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Cloud along with leveraging newer apps and technology like Slack, Click-up, and Airtable. Therefore, we want you to be comfortable with technology, and generally open and willing to learn. We are mostly a Mac office
- Comfortable working in a dynamic, and sometimes hectic, work environment, with a group of deeply passionate, youth-focused staff
- Ability to work flexible hours and overtime including evenings and weekends during peak program times, and during special events and activities.
- Driver’s license (preferred).
