Misr Wat

INGREDIENTS:

  • Onions, chopped

  • Salt 

  • Oil

  • Garlic, crushed 

  • Thirteen Berbere Spice mix

  • Red lentils, rinsed well

  • Water

  • Crushed Tomatoes

  • Tomato Paste

  • Ginger powder

  • Turmeric (optional)


INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Add onions in a pot and cook over medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes until it is  golden brown.

  2. Add garlic and our Berbere spice mix (as much as you want, be generous) and cook it for about 8 minutes gradually adding water and stirring   

  3. Wash lentils and add, tomatoes and small can of pasta sauce to the pot

  4. Continue to gradually add water until lentils are cooked

  5. Add salt or 1 Maggi chicken stock cube, 1 tbsp ginger powder and 1 tbsp Turmeric 

Stir and serve with Injera (Ethiopian teff flour bread or any bread. You can get it the Injera from Iham Injera at 590 Gladstone Ave or Tizita bakeshop at 365 Booth St unit A) if you haven’t tried injera before we recommend you to try it out with this recipe, it has such a unique flavour. You will love it!
